How to choose a wedding venue: what to ask on a tour

  1. Is the ceremony on site, and what is the plan if it rains? Ask which space is used for each part of the day and what the indoor backup is.
  2. What guest count is the capacity based on? Ask whether the stated capacity is seated dinner, cocktail style or ceremony only, and for the room you would actually use.
  3. Can you bring your own caterer, bar or decorator? Ask about outside catering and alcohol, who must be used, and any fee for outside vendors.
  4. What exactly is included in the price? Ask for a written list: tables, chairs, linens, setup, cleanup, coordinator, rental hours.
  5. What are the deposit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms? Read them in the contract before you pay anything, including what happens if you change the date.
  6. Are taxes, service charges and gratuity in the quote? Ask whether the number you were given is before or after them.
  7. Where do guests stay and park? Ask about nearby lodging, parking and accessibility for older guests or guests who use a wheelchair.
  8. Can you tour at the time of day you would marry? See the light, the sound and the space set up the way your event would be.
